In recent years, the emergence of chemical and antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria (MRSA, VRSA, VRE and others) within high-risk environments has caused major problems for the Health Service due to hospital acquired infections (HAI).

 

Three major contributors to HAI are: 

• microbial contamination (bacteria, viruses, moulds, mildew and fungi); 

• cleaning chemicals used, many of which are irritants and are toxic; 

• Current hygiene practices, or lack of them, which can spread contamination and create a breeding ground for microbial colonisation.
